Somno Drift: how to play, tips and FAQ

Written by the GAMEFREEX team.

Somno Drift is a stealth game in 3D about a sleepwalker. Noa gets out of bed with her eyes closed and her arms out in front of her, and walks. She does not stop on her own and she does not look where she is going, so that part is your job. You steer her, hurry her along, make her stand still for a moment, and use the things around her before she gets to them.

The nights take her through seven places: her house, an apartment block, wet night streets, a forest, an old hospital, the rooftops and finally the deep dream, where the furniture floats. The story has 33 short levels, five per place and three in the last one, with a few lines of story at the start of each chapter.

Nothing bad is ever shown. When something goes wrong, Noa wakes up with a start and the screen fades. The creatures are nightmare figures, not monsters with teeth: a drifting shadow, a thin thing with very long arms, a doll with button eyes, eyes in a wardrobe and a tall figure with a lampshade for a head.

How to play Somno Drift

  1. Steer with A and D (or the arrows, or by dragging on a phone). W makes her walk faster but louder; S makes her stand still until the stillness bar runs out (3.5 seconds to start with). The bar refills while she walks.
  2. Tap or click things to use them, or press E for the nearest one: doors, furniture you can push over a hole or out of a doorway, pillows to drop on the stairs, open windows, light switches and bells. Gold rings show what can be used.
  3. Stay away from holes, stairs without pillows, sharp toys, open windows (the draft pulls her toward them), roof edges and creaky floors, which give way if she stands still on them.
  4. Creatures see along the glowing fans on the floor. If one sees her long enough its fan turns red and she wakes up. Wait for it to look away, slip behind it, or hide with Space in a wardrobe, behind a curtain, in a bush or in a dark patch.
  5. Watch the wake meter at the top. Danger nearby, a creature's gaze and bright light fill it; calm rugs and music boxes empty it. Full meter, and she wakes up.

The five creatures

Shadow wraiths drift from one wall to the other and see along the way they move. At each wall they stop for about a second and look down the hall, away from you. A lamp turned on above them makes them fade out until it goes off again.

Hall lurkers crouch in an alcove and reach across the hall in a rhythm: a few seconds folded, a short wind-up you can see as a red strip on the floor, then the arms. In the first chapters they leave a gap by the far wall; from the middle of chapter 4 they reach all the way across. Fast steps close by make them reach at once.

Button-eyed dolls sit on a chair and turn their head slowly from side to side. Their gaze is narrow but long. A bell near the doll makes it look at the bell for about four seconds. Eyes in a wardrobe open and close every few seconds; tap the wardrobe once and it stays shut. The lamp-headed watcher in the hospital sweeps a beam of light down the hall and is not fooled by bells: wait in a dark patch until the beam has passed.

The wake meter

The meter goes from 0 to 100. Being next to a hole, the stairs, sharp toys, an open window or a roof edge adds up to 11 a second, a creature that sees her up to 48 a second (more with two), bright lamplight 9 a second, and walking into a wall 12 at once. On its own it drops by 5 a second, by 21 on a calm rug and by 14 while she hides. A music box takes 35 off at once.

The third star of a level is for keeping the meter under 60 the whole way, and the score adds 4 points for every point under 100 at its highest.

Survival and the daily dream

Survival is one dream path that never ends. The place changes every 140 meters, from the house to the deep dream and around again, and she walks a little faster the farther she gets. Creatures show up more often after the first few hundred meters.

The daily dream is the same path for everyone on a given day (it changes at midnight UTC), so scores can be compared. An online race uses the same idea with the room's path: every player walks their own Noa, and the others show up as pale ghosts with their names.

Tips to score higher

  • Push things early. A bridge takes about a second to fall into place, and she walks about 1.25 meters in that time.
  • Shadow wraiths drift across the hall and stop at each wall for a second, looking away from you. That pause is the moment to cross.
  • Lamps make wraiths fade away, but standing in bright light fills the wake meter. Cross the lit spot without stopping.
  • Ring a bell to make a doll look at it, then walk past on the other side.

Common mistakes

  • Using things too late. Doors, bridges and pillows need a moment to move, so tap them while they are still a few meters ahead.
  • Standing still in a creature's gaze. Stillness is for waiting outside the fan, not inside it; inside, keep walking or hide.
  • Spending the stillness bar on the way. It only holds 3.5 seconds at first, and an empty bar means she cannot stop when a wraith turns around.
  • Walking fast near creatures. W is loud: wraiths turn to look and lurkers reach.

Somno Drift FAQ

How is the score counted?+

A finished level gives 500 points, plus 15 per dream shard, 250 for the lost teddy, 150 for a music box, 4 for every point the wake meter stayed under 100 at its highest, and 5 for every second under the level's par time. The night's score adds up every level you finish in a row and goes to the leaderboard when you press END NIGHT. In survival and the daily dream, every meter is worth 5 points plus the same shard, teddy and music box points.

What are dream shards for?+

The dream shop. Stability, Longer stillness, Quiet steps and Night vision help all the time; Dream dash, Lullaby and Shadow cloak are abilities with a cooldown that open after chapters 1, 2 and 3. Upgrades cost 40 to 260 shards.

What do Freex Coins buy here?+

Only looks: four more pajama prints and two more caps, from 200 to 600 Freex Coins. Freex Coins have no money value.

Can two people play?+

Yes. On a computer, 2 PLAYERS is split screen: in Guardian mode the second player moves a dream hand over the path and opens doors, pushes furniture and calms Noa down; in Nightmare mode the second player drops holes, sharp toys, creaky floors, wraiths and dolls in her way, and you swap after a round. On a phone, Nightmare is played in turns and the device is passed between the players. Online, a race puts every player on the same endless dream path.

Is my progress saved?+

Yes. Stars, shards, upgrades and pajamas are kept in this browser, and in your account when you are signed in, so they follow you to another device.
