City Combat: how to play, tips and FAQ
Written by the GAMEFREEX team.
City Combat is a top-down shooter in 3D, drawn the way an architect might sketch a city at night: black volumes, thin white outlines, a few neon signs and lit windows. The street scrolls forward on its own and your hero, a hooded gunner in a cap, walks up it firing at whatever is closest.
You never aim. You choose where he stands, when to throw a grenade and which weapon to walk over. Enemies come in waves: gang members with pistols and rifles alongside zombies and ninjas, then big brutes and giant spiders from the second wave, ghosts and a heavy golem from the third. Each wave ends with a boss, and every boss you beat makes the street scroll faster.
Cars, buses, food trucks and parked tanks all blow up, and the ones ahead of you often leave a weapon behind. That is where most of your firepower comes from.

How to play City Combat
- Move with the arrow keys or WASD, or move the mouse over the game and the hero walks toward it. On a phone, drag anywhere: he follows your finger, keeping the same offset.
- He fires on his own at the nearest enemy, within about 45 degrees left or right of straight ahead. Stay level with an enemy rather than straight below it if you want to hit it from the side.
- Space or G throws a grenade (the green button on a phone). It flies forward, bursts after about a second and hurts everything within a wide circle. You start with 3.
- Walk over a box to pick it up. A weapon box replaces your gun until you find another one. Boxes disappear after 14 seconds.
- You have 3 lives of 5 hit points. Any hit, bullet or body contact, costs one point. The run ends when the last point of the last life goes.

Waves and bosses
A wave asks for a number of kills before its boss comes in: 8 in the first wave, 11 in the second, 14 in the third, three more each time. At most 4 enemies are on the street at once at first, one more per wave up to 9. Helicopters, jets, bombers and flying saucers cross the screen between them; the helicopters and saucers shoot at you, the bombers drop bombs that mark their landing spot with a red ring.
The five bosses come in a fixed order and then loop: the Kaiju breathes a fan of seven flames, the Big Ape throws twelve rocks in a ring, the Snake spits three venom shots every 0.7 seconds, the Mecha fires twin beams plus an aimed shot every 0.55 seconds, and the Spider casts a wide web. The first boss has 120 health and every later one gets 30 more per wave on top of its own base. A boss is worth 2,000 points plus 500 per wave and leaves five boxes behind: a heavy weapon, an H-Bomb, Shield or Tank, health, a grenade and a gun.
Each boss you beat makes the street scroll faster: about a third faster after the first one, a little more after each of the next. The faster it scrolls, the sooner enemies reach you and the less time a box stays in reach.
Weapons and boxes
You start with a pistol: 1 damage four times a second, which is slow against a boss. The SMG fires 1 damage twelve times a second with some spread, the rifle 2 damage six times a second. Shurikens (3 damage) fly through every enemy in their path, the boomerang (4) goes out and comes back, hitting on both trips. Rockets (6) and homing missiles (two at a time, 4 each) explode in an area, which also blows up the cars and props around the target.
The Tank box puts you in a tank for 12 seconds: its cannon hits for 8 in a wide blast and nothing can hurt you inside. The H-Bomb flashes the screen, destroys every enemy and every vehicle in sight (all counted in your score) and takes a third off a boss. The Shield is 8 seconds without damage. Health refills your five points, or adds a life when they are full.
Boxes drop from about half the enemies you down and from vehicles destroyed ahead of you. They last 14 seconds, then vanish.
Tips to score higher
- The first boss takes a long time with the starting pistol. Shoot every car on the way up: the weapon boxes they drop make the fight several times shorter.
- A Health box at full health adds a life, up to 5. Do not skip one because your bar is full.
- Keep one grenade for the boss. Three grenades are 15 damage, and they hit even when your bullets are being eaten by a building in between.
Common mistakes
- Standing still at the bottom of the screen. Enemies walk straight at you and touching one costs a hit point, so keep moving sideways.
- Ignoring the cars. They block your bullets, and they hold most of the weapon boxes. Shoot them as you go.
- Throwing every grenade at the first group of enemies. Save one or two for the boss, which has many times their health.
- Fighting a boss with the pistol for a full minute. If a weapon box shows up during the fight, go and take it.
City Combat FAQ
How is the score counted?+
100 to 320 points per enemy depending on the kind, 50 per vehicle or prop destroyed, 500 per yellow +500 box and 2,000 plus 500 per wave for a boss. Freex Coins come from that score at the end of the run, plus 10 per boss beaten and 1 per 10 enemies downed. Once per run you can watch a short ad to continue with one life, a short shield and the enemies around you cleared.
Can I choose my weapon?+
No. You get the one in the last box you walked over. The tank is the exception: it replaces your gun for 12 seconds, then you get the previous one back.
Can I play with a controller?+
Yes. The left stick or the D-pad moves the hero, A, B or X throws a grenade, and Start pauses. He fires on his own, so there is no fire button.
