Playing GAMEFREEX Offline: Install the App and Keep Playing

How to install GAMEFREEX on a phone or computer, what is saved for offline play, what waits for a connection, and how your scores catch up later.

What offline play means here

GAMEFREEX is still a website. What changed this year is that your browser can keep a copy of the site and its games on your device, so a game you have opened before keeps working on a plane, in a tunnel, or on a phone with no data left. You can also install the site like an app, with its own icon and its own window.

Installing is optional. Offline play works in a normal browser tab too, as long as the browser supports it. Installing makes it easier to find, and starts the download of every game for you.

Installing on Android or on a computer

Press Install the app. The button sits at the bottom of the side menu, and there is a second one on the home page. On Android, and on computers with Chrome or Edge, your browser then shows its own install prompt. Accept it, and GAMEFREEX starts storing every game for offline play straight away.

If the button opens a box with steps instead, your browser did not offer a prompt. Open the browser menu (the three dots, or the install icon in the address bar) and choose "Install GAMEFREEX" or "Add to Home screen". If neither option is there, the box suggests trying Chrome or Edge.

Installing on iPhone and iPad

There is no install prompt on iPhone and iPad, so it takes three taps:

  • Open gamefreex.com in Safari.
  • Tap the Share button, the square with an arrow.
  • Choose Add to Home Screen, then Add.

On a Mac with Safari, open File in the menu bar and choose Add to Dock. Either way, GAMEFREEX then opens from its icon in its own window, without the address bar. On Android, a long press on the icon also shows two shortcuts: New games and Popular games.

What is saved when you open a game

Every page you open while online is saved on the device as it loads. For a game, that means the game page and everything the game needs to run: its code, images and fonts. The next time you open it, you get the fresh version if the network is there, and the saved copy if it is not. The easiest way to prepare for a trip is to open the 3 or 4 games you want to play before you leave.

Music works a little differently. The 8 music tracks are saved the first time the music player starts, so if you want music offline, turn it on once while you have a connection.

Download every game at once

To have all 51 games ready, use Download games for offline. In the installed app, the Install button turns into this option. In a browser tab, you find it in the box that opens from Install the app. The box estimates about 15 MB for every game. In the installed app, the button shows the progress as a percentage, then reads Games available offline when it is done. In the box, a bar fills up, then a line confirms that all games are stored on this device.

The download stores the home page, the category pages, every game page, every game file, the game card images and the fonts. Videos and music are left out, because they are large and no game needs them to run. When the site is updated, a stored pack is refreshed in the background the next time you open GAMEFREEX online, so offline games do not fall behind.

If the download stops halfway, the box says so. Check your connection and press the button again.

What works offline

  • Every game saved on the device, with its normal controls, score and game over screen.
  • Freex Coins, earned as usual and kept on the device.
  • Your best score for each game on this device.
  • Progress in games that save themselves on the device, such as Mossu, Desktop Folk and Nation Simulation. Those saves never needed a connection.

When the connection drops, a note at the top of the screen says "You are offline, and you can keep playing", with a link to the offline page. That page lists the games ready on this device first, marked Ready to play, and dims the others with Needs a connection. You can hide the note; a small Offline tag stays at the top so you can open it again.

What waits for the connection

  • Leaderboards. The boards live on the server, so they cannot be read or updated offline.
  • Sign-in. Signing in, creating an account and resetting a password all need the network. If you signed in before the connection dropped, the site still knows your account and your runs are queued.
  • Ads. No ad loads offline, which also means no rewarded ad for extra coins. The cookie banner waits for the connection too, instead of covering a game.
  • Games you never opened, unless you used the download.

How your scores catch up

When you finish a run while signed in, it is stored on the device first and sent when it can be. On Android, and with Chrome or Edge on a computer, the browser can send waiting runs in the background, even with the app closed. Elsewhere, they leave as soon as the connection comes back, or the next time you open GAMEFREEX.

A badge at the bottom right shows how many scores are waiting, then how many were sent. Each run is checked by the server exactly as if you had played online, using the time you played it. One limit matters for long trips: a run that reaches the server more than 7 days after it was played is refused. The full list of checks is in How GAMEFREEX leaderboards work.

Freex Coins earned offline are merged with your account when you reconnect, and the higher of the two totals is kept. As a guest, your coins and best scores stay on the device, as they always have.

Freeing the storage

The site has no button to delete the offline copy. To remove it, open your browser settings, find the stored data for gamefreex.com and clear it. Uninstalling the app removes the icon, and clearing the site data is what frees the space.

Before you do that, know what goes with it. Clearing site data deletes everything GAMEFREEX keeps on the device: guest Freex Coins and best scores, saves in games like Mossu or Nation Simulation, your pixel character if you have no account, and any scores still waiting to be sent. Wait for the badge to confirm your scores were sent, and sign in first if you want to keep your coins.

When it does not work

Some private windows and older browsers cannot run the part that stores pages. The site still works online there, but nothing is saved for later, and finished runs cannot be queued. If the offline page says no game is saved on this device yet, open a game while online, or use the download.
